Dexter milk production - who's doing what and how?

new seperators

Hi all,

During the Stud tour of Vic after the recent AGM, I saw a new seperator - ELECTRIC!

Having done a bit of chasing around, SHOOF have them in their catalogue - and, because Shoof is a NZ based company, and our Aussie dollar is doing rather well against the NZ dollar at present, they are a couple of hundred dollars less than earlier.

Shoof has some great items for milking in their catalogue.

You can get the seperator in either the electric version (makes life easier) or the hand turn version.

Just thought those interested in miling would be interested in this!

Oh - and a p.s. on Small Cow Farm's milking herd. They no longer milk Dexters for their cheese products, as they had trouble getting milking staff, so gave up in despair in the end and now purchase in bulk milk. Such a pity.

Hi Denise,

I'm off to SHOOF, there's so many on my preserving forum that are looking for separators. We have an old (80 years or more) Lister hand operated one that still works beautifully.

What a shame about Small Cow Farm, it was a really good promotion of the Dexter milk and dairy products that's for sure. Hmmm maybe I need to get on with milking instead of taking the easy road and visiting the local dairy. ;)

Holy moly I just had a look at them http://www.shoof.co.nz/nzcatalogue/page_102.pdf they're expensive... I wonder about the freight, because they're heavy things.

Thanks
:D

Vicki you dont have to order from Shoof direct, most of the farm supply places can get them in for you. A much easier path to travel.

It is a shame about Mark and Lesley and Small Cow Farm's cheese, it would appear the young dont want to work hard in that area, and are not interested in learning the art of dairying.

Hi Denise,

It just makes me shake my head, so many young people are not realising the skills and knowledge that they're tossing away for some consumer clap trap... so many of the small family dairies are going because the children don't want to carry on, such a shame. It's the same reason you see 'big' farms cut into small acres once the parent dies...

I was lucky with our separator only $150 + postage (which did cost, but can't remember how much, they're heavy things) from ebay. Mind you even the old ones are going for much more now, more small acres with dexters me thinks. ;)
